Chicagoans of Norwegian descent donated this monument to the Norse explorer and adventurer, Leif Ericson. They commissioned Norweigian artist Sigvald Asbjornsen (1867 - 1954) to sculpt the the heroic bronze figure clad in Viking garb and standing on a massive granite boulder in Humboldt Park. Humboldt Park is a 207-acre park located on the north side of Chicago. It is a prominent part of the Humboldt Park community area. The park was named for Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist.
