The Detroit Science Center, founded by Detroit businessman and philanthropist Dexter Ferry nearly 30 years ago, was among the first centers for scientific exploration and learning in the country to include an IMAX Dome Theatre. The Detroit Science Center is located on John R Street in the heart of Detroit's revived cultural district. In December 1999, the Center broke ground on a $30 million expansion and renovation project. In July 2001, the Science Center reopened offering 110,000 square feet of exhibit space including an IMAX Dome and digital planetarium.
